Cultivate Courage: Day Four
get into God’s Word
By Michelle Rabon
READ: Hebrews 4:12, Joshua 1:8, Job 23:12
Day in and day out I sit at the kitchen table with three kids, completing school work and projects. Hours upon hours confined to a table. It’s a commitment that I made to my family, a desire God put in my heart to homeschool our kids. Sometimes the table feels like chains, holding me down, restricting my freedom to move and even breathe.
There was a season that the rocking chair felt the same way with the endless demands of beautiful nursing babies. Motherhood can smother us at times. It is not always picture perfect and ready for Instagram. We fight against our selfishness daily, we resist our own needs in exchange for the needs of the precious humans in our care.
Both of those places always press my inner fear that I am not good enough to be their mom.
But, the table is a ministry, the rocking chair is a ministry. Ministry to our families that takes great courage every day. Courage to do the difficult tasks, to train, love unconditionally, and to protect. Courage to know that I don’t have to be enough with Christ on my side. How do we do it day in and day out when we feel like we lack all the strength to take on the difficult days? When babies won’t stop crying, or the fighting at the table over math problems feels too hard.
Motherhood demands a source of strength; we can grab hold of courage through God’s Word to equip us to do this blessed ministry God has placed in our hands.
1. Treasuring His Word produces trust.
Being in the Word of God teaches us to look past our circumstances and see the bigger picture of who we are as moms. We learn through reading Scripture that all of God’s promises are true; God will not fail to see us through. (Job 23:12)
2. Knowing His Word drives out fear.
When we know the Word of God, we do not have to fear that we will mess up, and get it all wrong. The pages of Scripture are clear that God is with us always, even at the table or in the rocking chair. God is with us through every step of motherhood. (Joshua 1:8)
3. Following His Word is our sword of courage.
God’s Word is our weapon of courage. We carry it with us in every circumstance and situation. It is what equips us to be the moms God has called us to be. We cannot be godly moms without being in the pages of His Word. We cannot hope to face the challenges without it. (Hebrews 4:12)
No matter where you find yourself today, there is strength to be found in the pages of Scripture. Motherhood is a precious gift, and God has given us the tools to take courage every day.
1. How often are you in the Word? How can you incorporate Bible study time into your daily routine?
2. Is there a place in motherhood that can feel like a struggle or feel difficult at times? Ask God to remind you daily that your work as a mother is a ministry and to open your eyes to His bigger picture for your family.
