Visions of God: Day Five
mundane to mountain top moments (disciples on the mount)
By Nicole Lawrence
READ: Matthew 17
Like most of those who grew up in the church, I attended many faith-based camps, retreats, and mission trips. I vividly remember the moments of mountaintop highs. God speaking so clearly to my heart and in response my hands stretched out high, weeping in a heavenly worship experience. For a long time I clung to those moments with great fervor, needing them to sustain me as an adult Christian.
As a mom, the overwhelming need for Jesus in my life is constantly being etched in my heart. Motherhood breaks me and remakes me every day. In my desperation for a Savior, there are moments I want to meet God on the mountaintop again. I need Him to tell me that I can trust in Him when my children are struggling or that I can rest in His steadfastness when I feel thrown into the storm of another day of mothering. I want to experience Him in a way so real that I can’t help but fall down in awe.
There are three men who know what that is like. Jesus took Peter, James, and Paul up a mountain alone. At the top, God appeared in a bright cloud telling them that Jesus is His beloved Son and they should listen to Him. When they heard this they fell down in awe. The mystery of who Jesus was, and His mission on earth was revealed to these disciples. God allowed them a glimpse into who He is. Wow, what an incredible moment that must have been.
Their view from the top was life-changing, but what encouragement can we draw from this when we are in the trenches of motherhood? God is meeting us in real ways every single day. He is in the giggles of our children. He is in the whispers of, “I love you mommy”. He is in the triumphs of learning to ride a bike. He is in the butterfly kisses. He is even in the tantrums, laundry, and all-nighters.
It is in these experiences when the hope of the mountaintop is raw and real. Every moment of motherhood is leading us up the mountain, closer to God. From these mundane moments God is fulfilling His promises to us. As I look down from the mountaintop of today, joy spills from every inch of my heart, leaking out of the corners of my mouth in a joyous worship of hope fulfilled.
“While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown and were terrified.” Matthew 17:5-6
Have you had a “mountaintop experience” with God? How did it change you and your faith?
What moments in motherhood have recently had you yearning for a mountaintop experience with God?
How has God revealed Himself to you today? Was it in a moment you expected, or did it surprise you?
God, thank you for continuing to reveal Yourself to us as mothers. We are in constant need of You. Help us to find those everyday moments where You are showing Yourself. Whether it is a mundane moment or a mountaintop moment, we thank you for Your steadfastness and being a Father in whom we can put our whole trust. In Your holy name we pray, Amen.
