learning to sweat...and love it!

I once ran a half marathon. 

Don't congratulate me yet, I hated every second of it!

My goal was to run the whole thing, never stopping or walking. I did it but...right when I crossed the finish line I thanked God my lungs or knees didn't collapse and cried sighs of relief (literally) that I was done. 

Want to know something even MORE annoying?

I trained, MVP didn't. 

He ditched me at mile 4 and finished barely breaking a sweat. 

(he since regrets leaving me! You're sweet, love.)

My point is that I don't like running. I enjoy the calorie burn and the forearm sweat (true!) but of ALL the workouts, running is on the bottom. I lied. Spin class is FOR SURE on the bottom. 

As a mommy, getting to the gym is often a difficult endeavor. Which leaves my house and the good ol' out doors as my only option. We all know moms are dying to get out of the house...all the time. I'd opt for an outside workout any day; since we are being honest here, I don't want to spend nap time breaking a sweat! 

Hail Hail!

 I have found a way to ENJOY my running, and I NEVER thought I'd say that.

I've learned over the years that interval training is one of the best ways you can work out. 

CAUTION: I'm not a trainer! 

For me, interval training has been the best for my body. It gives me much more endurance, keeps my heart rate at an alternating pace, and the experts say it burns more calories. I also feel like I don't cramp as much or over exert my muscles. Best of all? I ENJOY my workouts so much more. I mean it when I say it, I actually enjoy it. You know why? Because it allows my body to REST. Yes, REST! It seems a bit of an oxymoron but seriously, who knew how profound REST is mid-sweat?

Did I hear you ask what interval training is?

Interval training is built upon alternating short, high intensity bursts of speed with slower, recovery phases throughout a single workout.

So for those of you who have ever said, "I hate running" or "I'm not a runner", you're lying to yourself! 

Grab your shoes, music, and stroller (if applicable) and get to it! (and please, let me know how it went!)

Here is what I have learned about loving to sweat (when the gym or pilates class is not an option)...

My favorite kind of music to workout to is upbeat current hiphop and pop music. My all time favorite workout artist is Pitbull but, to each their own. My current favorite Pandora station is Pop and Hip Hop Power Workout. 

You're welcome. 

So here's what you do. Run on the chorus and walk/slow jog/fast walk on the rest of the song. 

That's it folks! 

Before you know it you are paying so much attention to the music, you forget about the miles. And it allows you to recover and speed it up during the chorus. I did a 45 minute run (where normally I can last 25 min. MAX) and I burned just shy of 500 calories. I was shocked because I walked so much!
