In 2009, my mother passed away suddenly without any warning. To say that there was a grieving period is an understatement. My mom loved cooking for others even if it was less than perfect. She always tried to put her heart and soul into everything she did for others including cooking. One of my favorite ways to honor her life and celebrate the joyful, bright, and hospitable person that she was is by enjoying a weekly PIZZA night with her recipe. My toddler son now loves to help out by rolling the dough and applying the cheese and toppings. Because my mom never met my son, I truly enjoy this time because I can share with him all the fun memories I have of her.
Over the years since her passing, I have felt many emotions: despair, anger, bitterness, even rage. However, through all of my failings, God has been so faithful to me. He has taught me profoundly the gloriousness behind the gospel. He has held me up when my sin has destroyed relationships. And, I've slowly come out of the wreckage that death can cause in a life because of God's grace. He truly is victorious despite our wallowing and anxiety.
For me, cooking is something that God has used to heal. I frequently dust off old recipes that my mom would make and try and whip them up. I've learned to love and cherish cooking. Something about putting your hands to work when your mind is full gives such peace to the heart. I'm so excited to share it with you! I hope it brings your family as much joy as it does my family and friends. Buon Appetito!
