Life is full of unpleasant situations in which we desire something differently.  Like you, I’ve had experiences and circumstances that I wished were not as they were.  However, I’ve found one thing to help me through these tough times when I need a bit of encouragement.

I talk to myself.  Daily.  Hourly.

When my children were young, I was forced to return to work full-time as an RN.  My husband had lost his job and it was our only way to stay afloat.  Each day on the way to work, I’d cry a few tears and start the process of talking to myself.  The sentence I’d repeat over and over again was simple.

“This is how God has chosen to provide for our family.”

I’d say it again and again, putting emphasis on different words each time.

THIS is how God has chosen to provide for our family.”

“This is how GOD HAS CHOSEN to provide for our family.”

“This is how God has chosen TO PROVIDE for our family.”

Each day as I would get in the car, wondering how this could ever be God’s plan for a mom with young children, I would repeat this sentence again and again.  And day after day, God would meet me on the drive to work and lovingly remind me that His plan was perfect, even though I thought differently.  By the time I arrived at work, my tears were gone and I was trusting in the Lord’s great sovereign plan again.

Fast forward several years to a time when I was no longer able to work as a nurse.  Due to several unexpected events, I needed to walk away from my nursing career.  Still needing to provide a good portion of our family’s income, my husband and I prayed earnestly for God to meet our needs.

As my nursing career faded away, my Etsy shop began to soar.  Wholesale buyers and various other websites started featuring my products and sales soon exceeded my nursing income.  It was a time of God proving His faithfulness, once again, to our family.

Today, my at-home sewing career still provides more than half of our family’s income.  My husband is currently in graduate school and this is how God has chosen to meet our financial needs until his graduation.  Although there is so much for which I am grateful – being able to stay home full-time, work from home, have a flexible schedule and feed my creative need—I still find myself often saying, “This is how God has chosen to provide for our family.”

One of my favorite quotes is "Remember this, had any other condition been better for you than the one in which you are, divine love would have put you there." Charles Spurgeon

Whether I’m drowning in a pile of items ready to be sewn, packaging and shipping a large wholesale order, or staring in amazement at my Etsy shop order, I hear the voice inside my head say, “This is how God has chosen to provide for our family.”

And I give thanks to Him, who provides all we need each day, and pray for strength to be faithful to the task.

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:19
