Happy New Year!
It's been a little quiet around these parts over the last couple weeks, but it's a new year, and we're ready to kick 2015 off in a big way! It's time for resolutions, lists, diets, and all around make better-ment. Let's make all the promises: to be better, faster, stronger...This is the year that we are more present, more patient, prettier, well rested, more successful, richer, more selfless, more like Jesus, dangit!
Don't get me wrong, those things are all great. And maybe they're even a piece of what God has for us in 2015. But those lists I'm so eager to create every January 1st, are also full of things that God doesn't want for me....or you. He doesn't want our rules, legalism, and harsh self-criticism. He has no use for our striving or trying-so-very-hard out of our own strength. He desperately wants to rid us from our focus on more more more (of us us us) and allow us to wade in the deep comfort, rest and joy of more more more HIM. I know this, not because I'm smart, or Godly. I know this, because he told us so:
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” -Matthew 11:28-30 The Message
So let's start there, shall we? Let's make our lists if we must, chose our areas of focus wisely, listen for the "word of the year" if we hear Him whispering to us...But most of all, let's walk with God, keep company with Him, and learn the unforced rhythms of His grace.
I wish you all a free and light New Year.
