“Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them. Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.'”
Recently, our family has been facing some very important decisions -- decisions that require extra wisdom from God. As a family, we’ve been making an extra effort to spend time worshiping and praying together. My husband and I ask our children for their input and if they feel God has given them any answer or understanding to share with the family.
The other day, our oldest son brought Matthew 7:7 to our attention. It reads: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” In that moment, hope breathed on our family and we found encouragement together in God’s Word. God used my thirteen year old to remind us to keep asking with confidence because God will answer our family’s prayer
The amazing promises of God -- promises of wisdom, comfort, blessing, endless love, and power -- are available to my children, not just to me. God is intimately aware of each member of my household and wants to engage each of us directly. One of the things I desire most is to teach my children to see their lives in the context of the Gospel. I want my children to know God is actively working in their lives today. He sees them today.
Jesus makes time for children today just as He did when He walked the earth. He doesn’t look on the outward appearance to see how big or little someone is before He moves, speaks, or answers prayers. The Bible stories of Samuel, Mary, Daniel, and Joseph are wonderful examples of this.
Family times of worship, reading and memorizing scripture, and family prayer are all valuable to the heart of a child. I know sometimes family prayer is really just more giggling, whining, and distraction. It’s rarely glamorous or even spiritual. Don't be discouraged! These simple times of prayer and worship are worth fighting for together as a family.
This time together is teaching your child to see their life in the context of the Gospel. Your children are learning to see the patterns of God, how He works, and how to live out their faith. When they face trials, new situations, and questions -- whether at 13 or 30 -- they will be equipped to live with faith and an awareness of God and His ways.
