THE ROLE OF COMFORTER

THE ROLE OF COMFORTER

When they fall off the monkey bars, have a fever, or get their feelings hurt, they run to their comforter…Mommy. The one who makes things “all better!”

I’ve been reminded of this a lot these last few days (as I write this, my middle is just getting over a pretty awful virus). She has needed me for extra snuggles, to give medicines, and to just rub her head and tell her everything is okay. She has needed comfort that only I can give her.

It got me thinking about how I need comfort a lot too.

It may be because I’ve just had a bad day, or it may be because grief and pain are popping up in my heart. Or maybe it’s that a lot is going through my head and I need a little extra peace and comfort to make my thoughts stop running wild.

While people in our life are definitely placed beside us to provide some comfort, there really is only one person who can give me ALL that I am needing.

His name is Holy Spirit.

I love how the Amplified Bible version tells us about who He is in John 14:26 --

“But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you.”

So, on hard days or in hard seasons, I have a person in my life that is fully FOR me, whose job in my life is to bring comfort.

Just listen to those words…His names, His job descriptions.

Counselor. Helper. Intercessor.
Advocate. Strengthener. Standby.

I don’t know about you, but in my life as a whole, and especially in my role as a mother…I often find myself needing a Strengthener or a Standby.

What if our little ones didn’t come to us when they needed help or counsel or just some extra love? We would be sad for them that they weren’t receiving all they could. And we would be sad for ourselves that we weren’t able to fulfill the role we were made to fulfill as their mama.

God loves when we use Him for what He is there for. He loves when we remember “Oh, yeah, I may be feeling really down or awful today, but I have a friend who can comfort me!” He loves when we actually look at him as a best friend who has a constant shoulder to cry or lean on.

Tapping into the person and role of the Holy Spirit is essential to our well-being. His comfort for us is consistent, abundant, and always available. He never gets tired of His job. He loves to scoop us up and speak life and peace over us. Just like you want your little ones to run to you, He wants us to run to Him.

Take a minute and think about where you might be needing some help. Then ask Him to comfort you, let Him speak to you and love on you. Let Him be your Comforter today, in whatever area you need it. He is there for you. Always.

“Let, I pray You, Your merciful kindness and steadfast love be for my comfort, according to Your promise to Your servant.” -Psalm 119:76

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” -Matthew 11:28-30
