Finding My Identity in Motherhood.

I'm just a stay at home mom. I used to say that to people all time. Each time I spoke it, I felt a little embarrassed. I believed I should be doing more, having more, being more. As a new mom, I didn’t feel like I was enough. Having children certainly changes things, but did it mean my identity had to change too? It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and miss the purposes God has for us as mothers. You can start to lose yourself in the piles of laundry, endless dirty dishes, and stacks of toys.

When I start to feel overwhelmed by the demands of motherhood I need to remind myself who I really am. It's so easy to forget! Especially when we are being inundated with the highlight reels of other people’s lives on social media. Instead of finding our worth in the world we need to find it in the Word. What does the Bible say about who I am? I am more than a conqueror. I am a daughter of the King. I am blessed and highly favored. I am wonderfully and fearfully made. I am loved unconditionally by the creator of the Heavens and the Earth.

When I find my identity in Christ I realize I’m not just a stay at home mom. I am a mother filled with power. In Acts 1:8 we read we will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon us. I want to encourage you today to let the authority of God overwhelm your spirit.  As co-heirs with Christ we have access to this unbelievable power! The power to move mountains, the power to turn the impossible into possible, the power to soar on the wings of eagles. I used to think the power of God was only for Jesus. Only for his 12 disciples. Then I realized. His authority isn’t just for the 12 disciples, our pastors or famous evangelists. It’s for the everyday mom.

As mothers we have a unique place in the body of Christ. We have the honor of setting the atmosphere of our home, pointing our children toward God's love and pushing back the darkness. When I read God's word and find my purpose in him, I feel it is such a privilege to create the atmosphere of a home and to be the keeper of our house. Instead of being embarrassed or ashamed I am confident of who God says I am. Speak God's promises out loud, share them with your family and watch what happens. There is power in the tongue! As women of God, let us encourage one another to be who God created us to be. We all have special gifts and purposes in the body of Christ. Instead of the constant comparison, let's vow to lift one another up.
