The mantle of motherhood

Every Friday I share a video on the Beautiful & Beloved app about living Beautiful and Beloved, knowing that Truth and responding to life from it {if you love that idea you can download the app HERE}.  A few weeks ago we did a video on the mantle of motherhood and I thought it would be something that you all would love.

First let me ask you, what do you believe about motherhood?? Do you believe that we are only mothers to the babes that come through our bodies, to the little ones we bring to our homes and hearts through adoption?

Or can motherhood mean something more?  Can motherhood go beyond?? Can it break borders and overcome obstacles and make a difference in hundreds and thousands of lives?

Yep, that, the second one.

I have a friend who moved to Africa to love a teenaged boy who had never had a mama, now she is mama to several teens who have never known love like what she gives, who never knew mama before her.  I have a friend who loves fiercely 6 little girls that she can never bring home with her, yet she provides for them and encourages them and nurtures them in a way that shows them she is their mama.

Women who take in the lost and hurting friends of their kids, women who pour into the youth of their community, women who hug and love and encourage and provide for any soul God puts into their lives.  This is the stuff mamas are made out of.

What does God say about a mama??

In Titus 2:4, the Greek word philoteknos appears in reference to mothers loving their children. This word represents a special kind of “mother love.” The idea that flows out of this word is that of caring for our children, nurturing them, affectionately embracing them, meeting their needs, and tenderly befriending each one as a unique gift from the hand of God {see more HERE}.

My sweet friend Brandi told me about a reference she heard once about the mother heart of God.  How we can see the Father heart in God, the Savior and Redeemer heart in Jesus, and the Mother heart in the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit that guides us, that fills us, that speaks Truth to us, that moves us to act for the glory of God.  That is the mother’s heart.  It is one of God’s most incredible gifts to humanity.

I write this as a challenge to you mamas.  What if we looked around us for ways that God was calling us to motherhood outside of our homes? Maybe he isn’t maybe your calling is something else, but for many of us I bet that He is.  God gave us the gift of motherhood, and yes that means for the babies under our roof, but maybe it also means that the mantle of motherhood for us includes God’s children from our churches or neighborhoods, from across the globe or across the tracks.  Just keep your eyes and hearts open mamas, your calling to motherhood can be so much more than you imagine it is.
